An African-American college students reflects on people’s desire to touch her hair and how that has affected her self-conception since grade school. It is easy to allow other people’s expectations to control how you think about yourself. One must embrace their uniqueness in small way, in order to build your identity.
Ciara Jackson tackles the subject of ethnicity and identity through her hair and hairstyles. Ciara is currently a communication major with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Political Science. Ciara is actively involved in the Southern Utah University Honors program. She enjoys volunteering her time with the Make A Wish Foundation, the Frontier Homestead, and a local story time.
